Fig. 5.4-1. Transverse section of root of lupine (Lupinus). The large cells with red walls are vessel elements, the smaller cells with thick greenish-yellow walls are gelatinous fibers. Look at the fibers closely and you will see that in most, it looks like the wall has separated into two or more layers, and in some cells, the inner layer is buckled or wrinkled. These are typical features of gelatinous fibers, along with the lack of staining by Safranin.
