Fig. 6.4-1. Longitudinal section of axillary bud of coleus (Coleus). This is young axillary bud definitely has two leaf primordia (LP): we can see them attached to the bud apical meristem. But notice the arc of red-stained material above the bud; that is a young, growing leaf that was probably attached to this axillary bud along either the front or back, but microtoming cut away the attachment region. The leaf was curved, such that it arched over the bud, so the microtome knife caught this bit of it.
